DIY Rustic Wedding Cake Topper

On February 3rd 2015 my husband made me the happiest girl on the planet when we tied the knot and said I do! I couldn’t have asked for a more magical day. We both wanted a stress free and simple outdoor wedding. We met in Las Vegas where my husband grew up, so we decided to get married at a special place that we visited a lot when we lived there…Red Rock Canyon. Words cannot describe the beauty of this place. The red rocks are like nothing you’ve seen before, truly magical. In Romania when someone gets married you tell them ‘Casa de Piatra’, which literally means house of rock. You say this to wish them a marriage built on a solid foundation. I mean can this be a more fitting place to get married!? We were surrounded by enormous red rocks! I say we started our marriage on a foundation built of the sturdiest rock out there!

Initially we weren’t going to have a cake but I wanted to surprise my husband with something extra special, something made by me that the two of us could share. He absolutely loves my baking so I knew this would be the perfect surprise. I really wanted something vintage and rustic and what better way than with a naked cake decorated with blush roses. I used my Vanilla Cake recipe for this and just used 3 small 6 in cake pans instead! To add that memorable touch I made this adorable vintage cake topper. Keep on scrolling and you’ll find a step by step guide with product links! I purchased everything at Michaels.

Directions

  1. Cut twine to desired length depending on what you want to write and how many lines (make sure you cut a little extra so that the banner can curve and hang down).
  2. Tie ends of twine to skewers and wrap the ends around the skewer. Use super glue to fasten the ends to the skewers.
  3. Start off by drawing your shape onto the handmade paper so you can use this to cut around the stamped letters. Your shape should be drawn and cut out so that you can fold it in half and attach it to the twine.
  4. Stamp one letter at a time onto handmade paper. Now you can use your shape cut out from the previous step to trace around the area where you stamped your letter. Continue to do this for all the letters.
  5. Finally attach the heart sticker to the first shape you cut out in step 3.
  6. No you are ready to place the letters on the twine! You can do this by placing a small amount of glue on the inside of each cutout and folding the cutout onto itself over the twine. I like to do this so that the cutout is stuck to itself but you can still move it along the twine. Continue to do this for the remaining letters.
  7. Arrange on your cake and that’s it, you’ve got a beautiful handmade vintage and rustic cake topper!
